What are the types of HIV tests?

  • Antibody Test: Looks for HIV antibodies your body makes (can take 3–12 weeks after exposure to show positive).

  • Antigen/Antibody Test: Detects HIV earlier — looks for both the virus itself (p24 antigen) and antibodies.

  • Nucleic Acid Test (NAT): Detects the actual virus RNA in blood; used when early infection is suspected.
