An NCU (Nerve Conduction Velocity) test, more commonly known as a Nerve Conduction Study (NCS), is a diagnostic test that measures how fast electrical impulses travel along a nerve. It is often performed in conjunction with an Electromyography (EMG) test, which assesses muscle electrical activity. An NCS helps doctors evaluate nerve damage or dysfunction. During the test, small electrodes are placed on the skin over a nerve. A mild electrical impulse is delivered through one electrode to stimulate the nerve, and another electrode records the speed and strength of the electrical signal as it travels along the nerve. By measuring the time it takes for the signal to travel between two points, the nerve conduction velocity can be calculated. An NCS can help diagnose a variety of neurological conditions, including carpal tunnel syndrome, Guillain-Barré syndrome, diabetic neuropathy, pinched nerves, and other peripheral nerve disorders. Abnormal results can indicate nerve damage, demyelination (damage to the nerve's protective covering), or nerve compression.
